Star Ocean Till the End of Time is a RPG-game for the Playstation 2 developed by Tri-Ace and published by Square Enix. The battles are real-time instead of turn-based (like Final Fantasy for example). The story takes place way into the future. There's a galaxy-spanning government called 'the Pangalactic Federation'. There are various worlds with different races and creatures, and different levels of technology. There's also a form of magic in this universe called "Symbology". As the name implies, it works with symbols. But unlike the futuristic SF-intro suggests, most of the game is set on an underdeveloped planet, Ellicoor II, around 17th-century development (Earth), with few exceptions. There are two landmasses- Gait (where a large bit of the game is spend) and Greeton, a supposedly technological-advanced nation which is never explored in the game. The continent of Gait is divided into three countries; The military superpower Airgyglyph, the matriarchal theocracy Aquaria, and the tribal confederation Sanmite. At the time the player arrives, Airyglyph and Aquaria are at war.
The game starts on a resort-planet called Hyda IV where the main character, Fayt Leingod, is on vacation with his parents and his friend Sophia Esteed. Suddenly the planet is attacked by an unknown force (later revealed as the Vendeeni). Everyone has to evacuate, and Fayt gets seperated from his family and from Sophia. He winds up at the underdevelopped planet Vanguard III. There he meets Cliff Fittir, a member of the anti-federation organisation Quark. Cliff has been looking for Fayt, and for some reason Quark's leader wants to speak with him and save his father from the Vendeeni. The company leaves the planet, but they are attacked again by the Vendeeni. They manage to escape but get shipwrecked at the underdeveloped planet, Ellicoor II. They are forced to cooperate with Aquaria, the country at war with Airyglyph. However, the Vendeeni have found Fayt and launch an attack at both Aquaria and Airyglyph. Both countries don't stand a chance against such technology. Meanwhile, the leader of Quark, Maria Traydor, has arrived on Ellicoor II and it's revealed why the Vendeeni want Fayt so badly, and why Maria wants to talk with Fayt's dad so badly. Maria and Fayt have both been scientifically altered, meaning they have strange powers. Both Airyglyph and Aquaria realise that handing over Fayt to the Vendeeni isn't an option, so they decide to cooperate to create a deverision in order to get the group off the planet. While they were carrying out their plan, the Vendeeni-ships are destroyed by an unknown power-source. This power-source declares war with Earth. Creatures who call themselves "The Executioners" appeared and destroyed planets in the name of 'the Creator'. Quark in the meantime manages to save Fayt's father, but he gets killed in the progress. Before he died, he told the group to go to Moonbase.
When the group arrive at Moonbase and investigate the records, they find out the truth behind the appearance of the Executioneers. Some time ago, explorers were investigating the uncharted planet Styx. They stumbled on an artifact called 'The Time Gate'. This Time Gate began to speak and told the investigators that they were going to be eliminated because they angered the "Creator" of their universe. The investigators hurried back and began to study, and they soon figured out this 'prophecy' came from another plane of existence; 4D-space. They also found out that symbology might be used to gain entrance, and that this might be their last hope for survival of this universe. The scientist decided to use their own offspring; Fayt Leingod, Maria Traydor and Sophia Esteed. They were symbologically altered to be able to gain acces to 4D-space in order to stop this 'Creator'. The group decides to go to Styx and enter 4D-space in order to save their universe.
Upon entering, the group learns that their universe is called 'The Eternal Sphere', a computer-game developed by the Creator Luther Lansfeld, the owner of the Sphere Company. However, Eternal Sphere is not just a computer-game any longer; it has developed factors that make it a reality on itself. The group must find a way to stop Luther from deleting the Eternal Sphere. They succeed in defeating Luther, but they couldn't stop him from erasing the entire data from the Eternal Sphere. But because it became a reality on it's own, Luther couldn't delete the individual character data, thus making it possible for the Eternal Sphere to survive.
